Google has announced the Pixel Buds 2a, a new line of wireless earbuds featuring a Tensor A1 processor for deep integration with Gemini AI and new Active Noise Cancellation. The earbuds are smaller, lighter, and water-resistant with an IP54 rating. A key innovation is the charging case's replaceable battery, a step towards increased sustainability. The Pixel Buds 2a are now available for pre-order.
Google has just unveiled the Pixel Buds 2a, a significant update to its line of wireless earbuds that promises a blend of enhanced comfort, smarter features, and a commitment to longevity. Announced alongside the Pixel 10 and the Pixel Watch 4, these new earbuds are designed to be smaller and lighter than their predecessors, the popular A-Series, making them even more comfortable for extended use.
The biggest innovation lies within: the inclusion of a new Tensor A1 processor. This custom-built chip is the brains behind some of the most impressive new functionalities. Firstly, it enables a tight integration with Google’s Gemini AI, transforming the earbuds into a truly intelligent personal assistant. When connected to a compatible Android smartphone with the Gemini app, you can use voice commands to interact with the AI, making it easier than ever to get answers, manage tasks, or control your music on the go. The Tensor A1 also powers the new Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with a feature called Silent Seal 1.5, which promises to effectively block out unwanted background noise, from a bustling commute to a loud cafe.
The Pixel Buds 2a are also built for real-world use. They come with an IP54 certification, which means they are resistant to sweat and water splashes, making them perfect for workouts or getting caught in the rain. For moments when you need to be aware of your surroundings, a Transparency mode lets you hear ambient sounds, so you can safely cross a street or have a quick conversation without taking the earbuds out. The design is intuitive, featuring touch gestures for controls, and an IR sensor that automatically plays or pauses your audio when you put them in or take them out.
The battery life is robust, offering up to 7 hours with ANC on and up to 10 hours with ANC off. The accompanying charging case extends this to a total of 20 and 27 hours, respectively. However, one of the most remarkable and forward-thinking features is that the charging case itself has a replaceable battery. This is a major step towards sustainability and a significant departure from the industry norm, where devices are often considered disposable once the battery degrades. This allows you to extend the lifespan of your earbuds without needing to replace the entire product.
The new Pixel Buds 2a are now available for pre-order and will be released in Europe early October. With their blend of advanced AI, powerful noise cancellation, and a focus on user comfort and sustainability, the Pixel Buds 2a are poised to be a strong competitor in the crowded wireless earbud market.
